Fal / Mylor Class (2018/19)

MYLOR CLASS

Seaside Launch Day

What a great start to our Seaside topic this term! For our launch day, we investigated how to clean our dirty seawater that is full of plastic pollution, sewage and dirt. We tried lots of different filters, such as sieves, scourers and coffee filters to clean the water…and what a result! Now if only we could do it on a much larger scale…

After this, we looked at the patterns on seashells and printed them onto clay before creating paper plate seagulls which links to our literacy text, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. To cool off after all the hard work, we enjoyed some fruity ice lollies!

A warm welcome back to Tregolls after what we hope was an enjoyable Easter break. Please see the below details of the Summer curriculum and other key information.

Project and Science

Our new project will be focused on the Seaside, with the focus question being ‘How can we save the seaside?’ The children thoroughly enjoyed the launch day for the topic. They had fun learning how to clean dirty seawater to make it safe for animals to live in, imprinting sea shells into clay and creating a collage seagull.

In Science, we will be learning about animals including humans. They will learn the different structures of animals and how to categorise animals into groups, such as herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

Literacy and Numeracy

The literacy throughout this term will link with the main project, we will be learning and writing The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and we will produce leaflets about how to protect not pollute the ocean.

In Numeracy we will be learning about place value, addition and subtraction, shape, volume and capacity and we will be problem solving throughout all of these units.

Design Technology and Art

In the first half of term, in DT the children will be learning about how to create a lighthouse structure and how it can be made stiffer and more stable. We will be experimenting with colour and texture in Art, using artists, such as Monet, to inspire our own seascape pictures. The children will also learn about Andy Goldsworthy and make their own sculpture using natural materials.

PE days and Kit

Our PE day is Tuesday.  Please can you ensure that your child has a t-shirt, shorts and PE shoes in school for this session. One of the best ways for remembering this is putting it in a separate bag that remains on your child’s peg until each half term holiday. Girls must have their hair tied up for PE.

Home learning

Home learning will go out on a Tuesday and is to be returned by the next Monday.

Spellings will be tested each Tuesday in Mylor class, however this may be subject to change. Spellings will be sent home in their books. Please practice these spellings with your child and play fun games to help them learn how to spell. They will move on to the next set of spellings when they answer them all correctly.

Reading

Please ensure your child brings their reading diaries and book to school every day. We will be listening to children read however, this won’t be possible if they have no book. Please also ensure that you sign in their diary when they have finished reading their book, so that we can give them a new one to take home.

We are looking forward to sharing our fantastic learning with you.

Medium Term Plan

Athentic Outcome

The children had a fantastic Superhero Fashion Show! They were so proud showing off their tie dye capes and logo printed t-shirts. A massive well done for all the effort the children put into the costumes and for having the confidence to show off their amazing work on the catwalk!

Firefighter Visit

Mylor and Fal class enjoyed the visit from the Fire Brigade this afternoon! We learnt about the role of a firefighter and what to do if you are on fire…STOP, DROP, ROLL 🔥

We also explored the fire truck, looking at the different ladders and hoses. To finish off they sounded the siren (which caught some of us off guard!)

Police Visit

Mylor and Fal class had an exciting visit from another hero- Debbie a PCSO! We had so much fun trying on police hats and looking at lots of different police equipment, including handcuffs!

Launch Day

Mylor and Fal class have had an incredible start to their People Who Help Us/Superheroes topic on Thursday. The children came dressed as their favourite hero and a good thing it was as they had to get into their hero role by completing some impotant missions! They were first faced with an Ice Challenge whereby an evil villain froze the ocean so the children had to find a way to save the fish frozen in the water. The only way to save the fish was to use salt to melt the ice! After that, they had to use their superjerp moves to dodge through some laser beams to save poor teddy stuck on the climbing frame!

Then, in the afternoon, two doctors came in to visit and tell the children all about the life as a doctor. The children asked the pre-prepared questions and were able to experience a mini check up.

Firstly, what an exciting term of learning we have had! Fal class have been learning about Under the Sea and Mylor have been learning about Rainforests.  Due to shared interests by the children Fal and Mylor will be sharing the same topic for the Spring Term. We are all delighted to announce that the topic will be People who help us vs Superheroes, answering our key question, ‘Who saves the world?’.

Project launch day

Our launch day for this fantastic topic is on Thursday 10th January 2019- please can children come to school dressed as their favourite hero. On this day, we have a top secret mission for the children in the morning and in the afternoon we will have a visit from a doctor.  Over the Christmas holidays please can children think about some questions they would like to ask the doctor and write these in their home learning book.

Project and Science

During our topic, we will be learning about the people who help us in our community and also superheroes! We will have visits from doctors, the fire service, police and vets! We will be learning how to eat healthy and what we can do to keep healthy. We will also be learning about parts of the human body as well as animals and how they grow.

There are several exciting trips planned, which we will give you more details about nearer to the time.

Design Technology and Art

In the first half of term, in DT the children will be learning about The Great Fire of London. In the second half of term, in DT children will be designing and building a super hero car and in Art designing a superhero cape!
